Rohit Sharma was abruptly removed as captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season last year. The five-time IPL-winning captain’s fans are still hopeful that he would be reinstated.
At a recent event, a fan requested Nita Ambani, the owner of MI, to reappoint Rohit as the captain of the five-time championship-winning franchise with folded hands. In reply, the 60-year-old philanthropist and businesswoman nodded with a smile on her face and her hands folded.
“Rohit ko captain karo, madam (Please make Rohit the captain, madam),” the fan requested multiple times.

India’s ODI and Test captain, Rohit, is currently playing as a specialist batter for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. However, his returns have been quite ordinary. The 37-year-old has only managed 56 runs from five innings at an average of 11.20 and a strike rate of 136.59. He has played most of the matches as an Impact Player, coming into action only when MI are batting.
After being removed as MI captain ahead of IPL 2024, Rohit has been playing under Hardik Pandya’s leadership. The appointment of the Baroda all-rounder was met with immense criticism as Rohit’s fans felt that their favourite cricketer was not given enough respect. They showed their displeasure on the streets as well as on social media.
Hardik was also repeatedly booed in various stadiums, including MI’s home ground, Wankhede Stadium, during IPL 2024. The team finished last on the points table, and the abysmal performance throughout the season further aggravated the problems for Hardik.
However, he won the hearts of the fans by playing a pivotal role in India’s triumphant T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. This season, Hardik has received the backing from fans. However, results have not been exemplary. MI have won just two out of their first six matches. They ended the undefeated streak of Delhi Capitals on Sunday, April 13, and this should give them some confidence heading into their upcoming games.
