England were 29 runs behind at the end of Day 2 with Harry Brook and Ben Stokes remaining unbeaten on 132 and 37 runs respectively. They continued to pile up runs on Day 3 and propelled their partnership to 159 runs for the sixth wicket. Brook trudged back after scoring 171 off 197 balls laced with 15 boundaries and three maximums.
Chris Woakes followed suit scoring just one run. Stokes found some assistance at the other end in the form of Gus Atkinson. The duo added 63 runs for the eighth wicket before Gus departed after chipping in with 48 off 36. 40 runs later, the England captain, Stokes was outdone by Matt Henry and he finished his innings scoring a resilient 80 off 146 balls.

With a free license to go all out against the New Zealand bowling attack, Brydon Carse remained unbeaten on 33 off 24 complemented by two boundaries and three maximums. Shoaib Bashir’s wicket brought an end to England’s batting and they wrapped up their innings on 499 with a lead of 151 for New Zealand to clear and provide a target.
New Zealand lose six wickets on Day 3
For New Zealand, Matt Henry claimed four wickets as Nathan Smith picked three. William O’Rourke and Tim Southee chipped in with one and two wickets respectively. When New Zealand came out to bat, Brydon and Woakes sent the openers packing as the hosts were reeling at 23/2. Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra put up a 41-run stand for the third wicket before the latter departed scoring 24 runs.

Williamson ended his knock at 61 off 86 and Tom Blundell walked back for a one-ball duck and Glenn Phillips’ stay ended scoring just 19 runs. For England, Carse and Woakes picked three wickets each. Daryl Mitchell and Nathan Smith are unbeaten on 31 and one respectively and the Kiwis lead by just four runs with their score being 155/6.
