Both Sri Lanka and Netherlands entered the match no. 38 to play for pride, as this was supposed to be their respective last game of the T20 World Cup 2024. The Lankan Lions had a disappointing campaign so far, but finally got their first victory of the tourney with a might 83-run win on Monday, June 17. Charith Asalanka was the biggest anchor in this win, scoring a brisk knock of 46 from just 21 balls, propelling the Wanindu Hasaranga-led side to an above par total of 201/6 after 20 overs.
Opener Kusal Mendis also scored 46 off 29 after his partner Pathum Nissanka departed on the second ball of the innings. Angelo Mathews and skipper Hasaranga also made handy contributions towards the back end of the innings. Meanwhile, Logan Van Beek picked two wickets, but his economy was a concern. Other bowlers Vivian Kingma, Aryan Dutt, Paul Van Meekeren, and Tom Pringle shared a wicket each.
During the chase, the Dutch had a daunting task ahead of them, and the openers Max O’Dowd and Michael Levitt provided a good start, keeping the required run-rate in mind. After O’Dowd’s dismissal in the fifth over, one wicket called for another as soon, they were reduced to 71/5. Slingy pacer Nuwan Thushara was the crucial guy with the ball, adding three scalps to his kitty, while Maheesh Theekshana and Mathisha Pathirana shared four wickets equally.

Edwards & Co were bundled out for 118 after 16.4 overs, with the final wicket falling in the form of van Meekeren, caught in front of his pads by Thushara. Meanwhile, Asalanka, for his blistering knock, and two amazing grabs in the field, received the Player of the Match award, as the Lankans won by 83 runs in what turned out to be a one-sided victory.

We all saw the game last night where the wicket was really good. Wanted to put a score of 160-plus. We all know with our bowling attack it’s a good total. In first two games, we lost 3-4 wickets in first six overs. Today we batted well in first six overs. He (Asalanka) has a very good talent and he proved today what he can do, especially in middle overs and the end. Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva also played a good part.

The margins of error were smaller. We missed (the mark) throughout those middle overs. We just didn’t execute. The shorter side, and the wind going that way plays a part. Little bit disappointing but it’s obviously a factor in the Caribbean. Probably a little bit of both. We had good patches throughout the tournament. You just can’t afford that against good quality sides. You’re out here to win the game. Can’t fall too far behind as they’ve got good death bowlers. Will obviously sit down and reflect after the tournament. There’s plenty to work on.

To be honest, the conditions are better here than in the USA. We all enjoyed the ball coming onto the bat and that allowed us to play our shots. I’m enjoying my finishing role, it’s a tough place to bat at 5, you can come in at 10 for 3 or 100 for 3, I have to adjust to the conditions. I think I have to improve a bit more and be more consistent. Little bit disappointed about the results in the first two matches, but we enjoyed the tournament as a team.
