              We’ve all been there before, that moment when life throws a spinning heel kick to your face that you didn’t see coming. It doesn’t take much to make that feeling even worse. Bills pile up, deadlines loom over your head, and three new emails pop up in your inbox for every one you respond to.

              Some people manage stress with unhealthy habits like splurging on ice cream or drinking excessively, but there’s a much healthier way to manage stress: martial arts training. Let’s dive into why martial arts training can help protect your mental health by giving you an outlet to vent negative emotions.

              1) Provides Stress Relief

              Martial arts melts stress by burning off cortisol, flooding you with feel-good endorphins, and giving your mind a powerful, punch-packed escape.

              2) Reduces Anxiety: Quiet The Mental Chatter With Mindfulness

              Anxiety often makes people feel like they’re stuck in an endless loop of “what-ifs.” What if I fail? What if they don’t like me?

              Martial arts helps to break that cycle by grounding you in the present. You don’t have time to worry about tomorrow’s presentation at work when you’re fighting your way out of a rear-naked choke.

              Research from Harvard Medical School shows mindfulness practice can reduce anxiety by up to 39%. There’s no room for mental noise when you’re busy learning martial arts techniques. Your brain is fully focused on what’s going on around you, not the past or future.

              Martial arts training also provides controlled exposure to stress, like during sparring sessions, for example. This exposure teaches your nervous system to handle pressure without spiraling.               Martial arts gyms are built on camaraderie. Everyone who trains has shared struggles, which makes it easy to bond in a dojo’s positive atmosphere. You might feel a little embarrassed when you completely mess up your first attempt at an armbar, but everyone in the dojo, instructors included, has been there before, so they relate to your struggles. They’ll be quick to remind you that it’s part of the learning process, and you’ll be able to perform the technique correctly once you drill it a few dozen times.

              Training in martial arts will give you a sense of belonging, even if you don’t have many friends or family members close by. Knowing you’ve found a tribe of people who will always have your back does wonders for your mental health.
