Manchester City did big business in the summer transfer window but could have brought in one final new signing if they had got their way.
Pep Guardiola sanctioned deals for a number of players in the window and spent the guts of £200million on recruits in a bid to push Liverpool and Arsenal for the Premier League title.
The likes of Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki all arrived as well as four others as the Spanish coach shuffled his pack and strengthened his squad to compete on all fronts again this term.
They also allowed plenty of stars to leave the club with James McAtee moving to Nottingham Forest and right-back Yan Couto swapping England for the German Bundesliga.
The latter was one who departed but in his position, Guardiola opted against signing fresh talent despite only really having Rico Lewis as his main option on that flank defensively.
Manchester City considered Nicolo Savona of Nottingham Forest
It could have been different, though, as has now been revealed by an agent who claims City asked for the conditions of his player before the window slammed shut.
Nottingham Forest defender Nicolo Savona was sounded out by the Premier League giants, according to his representative Michele Puglisi.
“City asked for information, there had been some contact and they have reiterated their esteem for him. Then I don’t know if we can talk about a possibility or not,” the agent told TuttoJuve.
“Nicolo had just renewed his contract with the club, and there was a desire to continue this relationship. Juventus, very honestly, told us they would evaluate any offer received during the transfer window. This had always left doors open.
“The Premier League was certainly one that continued to show interest in him. In recent days, as usual, things have been able to unblock more quickly, and we resumed contact with Nottingham. And the moment we realised there was a possibility, that’s when it happened.”
Savona made Forest debut vs Arsenal
Italian full-back Savona would ultimately not be brought to the Etihad by the club who had considered the swoop, but it comes at a rather exciting time for him at the City Ground.
Ange Postecoglou has replaced Nuno Espirito Santo at Nottingham Forest and the Australian head coach loves his full-backs to bomb forward and attack as often as they can.
That might suit former Juventus kid Savona down to the ground as he made his league debut for his new side under Big Ange in their defeat to Arsenal yesterday afternoon.
Savona came off the bench at half-time for Murillo and played the second 45 in a first outing which may have come sooner for the player than most expected.
