Manchester United and Bournemouth served up a Premier League classic on Monday night by drawing 4-4 in a topsy-turvy game at Old Trafford.
This was the highest-scoring Man United game in the Premier League since October 2022 when they lost 6-3 at Manchester City. However, Ruben Amorim’s side beat Lyon 5-4 after extra time in the Europa League last season.
Man United 4-4 Bournemouth
United started on the front foot and took an early lead when Amad Diallo headed home after 13 minutes, capping a dominant opening spell in which Bournemouth struggled to get out of their own half.
Despite United’s control, the visitors equalised against the run of play as Antoine Semenyo powered forward and finished clinically, punishing a rare lapse at the back.
United restored their lead on the stroke of half-time when Casemiro nodded in from a corner, sending the hosts into the break ahead after a first half in which they registered 17 shots.
The match turned on its head immediately after the restart as Bournemouth scored twice inside seven minutes, with Evanilson striking 38 seconds into the second half before Marcus Tavernier curled a superb free-kick into the bottom corner.
United responded once again as Bruno Fernandes levelled the score with a superb free-kick, before Matheus Cunha put the hosts back in front just two minutes later with a composed finish from close range.
However, Bournemouth refused to go away. Substitute Eli Junior Kroupi squeezed between United’s central defenders and fired home a late equaliser to make it 4-4, capping a dramatic contest that swung repeatedly from one side to the other.
There was still time for further drama, with United goalkeeper Senne Lammens required to make two sharp saves in stoppage time to deny David Brooks a potential Bournemouth winner and ensure the points were shared after a dramatic Premier League encounter.

Ruben Amorim says result should have been “completely different”
At his post-match press conference, United boss Ruben Amorim said the scoreline failed to reflect his side’s dominance — particularly in the first half.
“It’s really disappointing. We are really disappointed. Crazy game. It might look like we lost the two points in the second half but I think we lost them in the first half. We dominated and created so many chances. We had to go to half-time with a different result. The result should be completely different.”
The United boss felt his side paid the price for lapses in concentration after taking the lead again in the second half.
He added: “We score two goals again and then we have to finish the game. A throw-in in our possession, we need to think about, not to go again but to take calm and to close the game.”
Despite his frustration, Amorim — who recently admitted Man United were underachieving — highlighted the improvement shown compared to recent home performances.
He concluded: “It was a fun game for everyone at home. I think we started really well. We did a very good first half.”
Both teams outperformed expected goals
In terms of xG figures provided by Opta, United shaded the contest with 3.29 expected goals, while Bournemouth’s figure was 1.92.
Those stats back up Amorim’s suggestion that United should have won. However, they also paint the picture of a wild game that was wide open.
Man United — the Premier League’s most attacking team this season, purely in terms of shots taken — more than edged Monday’s contest in terms of attempts, registering 25 to Bournemouth’s 14. But when you concede as many as nine shots on target in a match, you are opening up a huge margin of error.
