India cricketer Deepti Sharma, who captains UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), has accused her franchise teammate Arushi Goel of stealing jewellery, cash, and other valuables worth over INR 25 lakh at her residence in Agra. Deepti has also accused Arushi of trespassing into her private property – a flat in Agra’s Sadar area, in the FIR that she lodged recently.
As per the FIR, Arushi has been accused of theft, house breaking, criminal breach of trust, and insult under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which has now replaced the Criminal Procedure Code. Deepti, who herself happens to be a Deputy Superintendent of Police for the state of Uttar Pradesh, has been busy with the national team in Bengaluru, and her brother Sumit has lodged a complaint on her behalf in Agra.
“The two cricketers became close over the years through their association in the same team. Then, Arushi and her parents started exploiting Deepti financially, citing family emergencies and financial distress,” the FIR read.
“My sister lost over INR 25 lakh in the two-year period. When she confronted Arushi, the latter refused to return the amount.” Sumit was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
“The incident has caused significant distress to Deepti, who is at the moment preoccupied with her training commitments and is preparing for the Team India camp in Bengaluru ahead of the England tour,” he added.
Sukanya Sharma, the Assistant Commissioner of Police at the police station where the complaint was lodged, said that they registered the FIR after finding strong prima facie information in the details provided.
“Deepti’s brother, Sumit Sharma, approached the Sadar police station with the complaint. Prima facie, we found some truth in the complaint and filed an FIR under BNS sections 305 (a) (theft), 331 (3) (house breaking), 316 (2) (criminal breach of trust) and 352 (insulting someone with the intent to provoke a breach of peace),” the ACP said.
While Arushi has not responded upon being reached out, further details in the matter are awaited as the police department has already started the investigation.
