Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are having an off-season regarding wins in the IPL 2025. The MS Dhoni-led side has lost six matches out of eight and is on the verge of elimination. CSK are the only team who have reached the IPL finals ten times and qualified for the playoffs 12 times. They have been one of the most dangerous teams in the world, but they have lost their track this time.
The franchise doesn’t have a good batting lineup, and the bowlers have failed to show up in all the games. If we analyse their batting order, we see that they started with Rachin Ravindra and Rahul Tripathi and then went to Devon Conway instead of Tripathi. None of the combinations worked for the Super Kings. They are now trying out Shaik Rasheed and Rachin in the top order.
Bringing Rahul Tripathi and Deepak Hooda in the mega auction seemed like a massive mistake for the Yellow Army. The management failed to grab the core team during the mega auction in November 2024. This isn’t the first time CSK have been clueless on the field. In this article, we will discuss the other seasons where CSK finished towards the bottom of the points table.
Here are the two instances where CSK finished low in points table:
1. IPL 2020
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 was the first season in which CSK didn’t qualify for the playoffs. In that season, only eight teams were playing, and among them, the Yellow Army finished in seventh place. Many things went wrong for CSK, starting with the opening combination. The opening pair of Murali Vijay and Shane Watson didn’t work. Despite changing the opening, CSK still couldn’t win many games in the season.
They lost their place in the playoff race mainly because of their batting failure. The middle-order batters didn’t show any intent while batting and failed to hit boundaries and maximums in crunch situations. CSK failed to chase low targets like 150-160 runs, which was normal even in that season. Hence, they finished in seventh position on the points table.
2. IPL 2022
The next time CSK faced difficulty qualifying was in IPL 2022, when Ravindra Jadeja was given the team’s captaincy. MS Dhoni passed the baton to Jadeja, and he was supposed to take the team forward. However, things didn’t go as planned by the management. Jadeja couldn’t manage the team and was also injured during the season.
Then, Dhoni took over the captaincy but couldn’t take the team out of misery. CSK finished in the ninth position on the points table, which was quite disappointing for the fans. The issue was the same, batters didn’t take up the responsibility and failed to show intent throughout the entire season, which led to the team’s downfall.
