Bangladesh Cricket Board is on edge as they await the test results of star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s bowling action. The results, expected within days, will determine his eligibility for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy squad.
Shakib’s bowling came under question during a county match in September 2024 for Surrey in England. He was reported for a suspect action, leading the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to suspend him. The suspension under ICC regulations excluded him from bowling in all formats of the game. An initial test at Loughborough University confirmed irregularities in his actions, leading to an absence from international and domestic cricket.
The veteran recently underwent a second bowling action test at a facility in Chennai. The BCB is now awaiting these results before finalizing their squad for the prestigious Champions Trophy, with the ICC’s deadline for team announcements on January 12.

We don’t need a big change in his bowling action: Mohammad Salahuddin
Shakib’s potential inclusion has already attracted support from influential figures within the BCB and the team. Board president Faruque Ahmed publicly expressed his desire to see Shakib back in action, while ODI captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has also given his take. Both believe the all-rounder’s experience could be invaluable to Bangladesh’s campaign in the tournament.
“It was very shocking to hear that Shakib couldn’t pass the bowling action test [at Loughborough]. I will have to find out whether he has tested himself again. We have to wait for this information. The board hasn’t instructed us fully on Shakib. I think every minute counts. I am sure we can clarify this in a day or two,” BCB’s chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Meanwhile, Shakib has been working hard to address his bowling action issues. Coach Mohammad Salahuddin has been crucial in guiding Shakib through video consultations. Salahuddin opened up about the minor adjustments required to bring Shakib’s action back in the green.
“He already went through the test. I know the A-Z of Shakib’s bowling. I couldn’t go and train him (in India). I think he knows what to do. We discussed a few things about what he has to do with his arm. We don’t need a big change in his bowling action. He can do it quickly too. But when an allegation comes, a person usually has to think about it,” Salahuddin told Jamuna TV on Tuesday.
