It was recently announced that the co-main event will feature Callum Walsh facing off against Fernando Vargas Jr. in what is sure-to-be a hard-hitting and exciting Super Welterweight showdown. Of course, Walsh is the first boxer signed by UFC CEO, Dana White, who just so happens to be promoting the Canelo-led event.
Walsh has more than lived up to the hype so far, as the current WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight champion has racked up a mint record (14-0) with 11 knockouts (see examples here and here). At just 24 years of age, Walsh is without a doubt one of the best prospects in the sport right now. And as long as he has the backing one of the the best combat promoters in the world — who is now shifting more of his attention to boxing with a partner who has deep pockets — the sky is the limit.
As for Walsh’s next challenge, it will undoubtedly be the biggest of his career, facing a fellow undefeated rising star in Vargas, who has amassed a perfect record (17-) with 15 knockouts. Son of former IBF Light Middleweight titleholder, Fernando Vargas, “El Feroz” has fighting in his blood, as his other two siblings are also undefeated up-and-comers with Emiliano Vargas holding a 12-0 mark and Amado Vargas sitting at 11-0.
