Liverpool have agreed a club record €136.3 million transfer fee for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Previous reports suggested the two clubs agreed on a deal worth up to €150m, which would have made him the most expensive signing in British football history.
But now Ornstein has confirmed the Reds will pay a €117.5m upfront fee with a further €18.8m in add-ons for the 22-year-old.
The attacking midfielder had already agreed personal terms with Liverpool last month, and he is now poised to sign a five-year contract at Anfield.
Wirtz is regarded as one of the most gifted talents in European football, who has been a consistent performer for Leverkusen over the years.
The midfielder scored 18 goals and provided 20 assists in 49 appearances in 2023-24, powering the German outfit to a domestic double.
Leverkusen endured a largely disappointing 2024-25 campaign, but Wirtz maintained his excellent standards, making 31 goal contributions in 45 matches.
Bayern Munich and Manchester City were keen to secure the German’s signature, but Liverpool beat the two European giants to the transfer.
Wirtz will become the Reds’ second signing this summer after Jeremie Frimpong’s arrival at the Merseyside club.
They have also sealed a move for goalkeeper Armin Pecsi, who will compete with Harvey Davies as back-up.
Meanwhile, Giorgi Mamardashvili will arrive from Valencia after Liverpool agreed a deal for him last summer.
