With three consecutive wins, England were looking unstoppable in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup. Their batters were in good form and it was expected for the Heather Knight-led side to beat West Indies and qualify for the semi-finals as the league leaders. However, in reality, the Hayley Matthews-led side stunned England at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium and knocked them out of the tournament.
Batting first, England posted 141 runs on the board. The openers failed to give a good start but veteran all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt took control of the situation and made 57* runs to bail England out of trouble. Captain Heather Knight supported her for a brief while but had to walk out following an injury. After that, it was all Sciver-Brunt.
She barely received any support from the other end and that was the highlight of the first innings. Afy Fletcher was the star with the ball for West Indies, picking up three wickets while Matthews picked two. England’s lower-middle order, on the other hand, scored a total of just 29 runs and that made the difference in the end.
When it came to the chase, West Indies openers Matthews and Qiana Joseph were phenomenal, to say the least. The duo registered a partnership of 102 runs – which is the highest for West Indies in T20 World Cup history. Matthews made 50 runs while Qiana hit 52 and that set the game for West Indies. Later, Deandra Dottin scored 27* runs off 19 balls to win the game for West Indies.
To qualify for the semi-finals, West Indies had to win the game and they did it in some style. They qualified as the league leaders while South Africa finished at number two. Following a huge six-wicket defeat, England’s NRR suffered which pushed them out of the competition. The players after the game were in tears while West Indies players were elated following the win. They will take on New Zealand in their semis clash while South Africa will play defending champions Australia.
