Singapore is known for its diverse and delicious food options, but eating out can get expensive. As inflation news hits the headlines regularly, you might wonder whether you can still find an affordable dining place to get healthy meals. And while meal prepping is always a good idea if you have specific fitness goals, sometimes it’s easier to grab a bite when rushing from work to the gym.
If you’re looking for healthy and affordable food options in Singapore, you’re in luck! Some budget-friendly places offer healthy food options for S$10 and less. Best of all, Evolve MMA Singapore outlets are near all of them. Perfect for all our martial arts athletes who are headed for Muay Thai, Brazilian Jit-Jitsu, or boxing classes after work!
1) Rong Ji Chicken Rice & Porridge
Dunman Food Centre is just a ten-minute walk away from Evolve MMA Kinex. Here, you can find all kinds of local dishes under $10. The popular food stall in Singapore serves traditional Hainanese chicken rice. It has received positive reviews for its delicious white chicken and comforting bowl of porridge. Diners gush about its “jelly-like” chicken pieces, fluffy rice, and the gooey egg atop its porridge. The stall is open from Monday to Sunday from 6 am to 3 pm and closed on Wednesdays. The best thing about heading to Dunman Food Centre after a hard workout is that you can also order other affordable dishes to go with your chicken rice!
2) Heng Kee Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee
You have many choices if you usually work out at Evolve MMA Clarke Quay. Walk 8 minutes to Hong Lim Complex, where you’ll find two storeys of good hawker food. Our choice is Heng Kee Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee. It is slightly more expensive than your usual hawker fare, but you can still get a hearty bowl of noodles for under $10. Here you’ll find something that resembles laksa, but it is less spicy. The generous curry gravy is scooped atop a luscious offering of tau pok, fish cake, and potato chunks. Choose soup bee hoon as it’s lower in calories (under 300kcal) than yellow noodles. Be prepared to queue if you want to have this during lunch though, as the wait can get long. It’s also only open Mondays to Saturdays from 10 am to 3:30 pm. For workout warriors who head to the gym at 8 am, you can head there in time for a bowl of curry to start your day.
3) Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut
Evolve MMA, located at Orchard Central, is well-connected to several air-conditioned food courts and open-air dining spots. For instance, you can just visit its neighbouring mall, 313@somerset. On the topmost level is Food Republic, with a wide variety of affordable local fare. But a ten-minute walk to Lucky Plaza is required if you want to tuck into gorgeous, heartwarming Indonesian food. Over there, the Indonesian restaurant Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut serves up authentic Indo food at great prices. Reviews say you can get a delicious plate of Ayam Penyet (Fried chicken rice) with five types of spices, from mild to very spicy. Go for the grilled duck with rice and avoid the fried food for a healthier option. Prices are under $20 for the various dishes.
4) Miss G’s Grill & Bar
If you work out at Evolve MMA Far East Square, pop over to Miss G’s located on the ground floor. The bar may look like one of the area’s many drinking spots but don’t be fooled. Here, you can tuck into generous portions of its Japanese-inspired fusion dishes like Iberico Charsiew Rice with Onsen Egg and Cold Truffle Somen and Hotate. Its lunchtime menu is incredibly enticing. Prices start from $7.90. For the health conscious, Miss G’s lunch options are ‘clean eats’, where one can select the amount and type of carbohydrates and proteins in your meal. For example, you can choose between sushi rice or quinoa and add raw salmon or tuna to your customised meal. It’s also a great drinking spot for after-dinner gatherings. You can get oysters, grilled squid and other exotic sharing plates. The drinks menu is extensive, with everything from soju, wine and cocktails. Look out for the Happy Hour timing so you can save even more!
5) EAT.
Last but not least, Evolve MMA Star Vista is another well-located martial arts gym in Singapore with plenty of affordable food options. For a quick and affordable meal, head over to EAT. The ubiquitous food chain is everywhere in Singapore, and their dishes are always reliably yummy. The store offers traditional local fare such as bak chor mee (minced pork noodles), fishball noodles, laksa, and fried snacks. Go for the soup fishball noodles, and make sure you order kway teow noodles. Kway teow soup, according to the Health Promotion Board, has less than 500 calories. If you want to explore other quick and cheap food options, the mall also has Crave’s Nasi Lemak, Nam Kee Pau and other dining outlets in the basement. Star Vista has no shortage of affordable food fare, all housed in one mall.
